What is Quality Matters?

Quality Matters is a nonprofit organization which developed a rubric of course design standards that is currently used by colleges and universities worldwide. Click the video button below for a brief introduction to the organization and its purpose:

This initiative resulted in quality designations for all online courses listed in the Florida Virtual Catalog. These designations rely on the Quality Matters (QM) Higher Ed. How is FSCJ involved?

FSCJ is one of the over 1000 institutions that subscribes to Quality Matters standards. All Master Course shells developed in the Center for eLearning (CeL) are designed with QM standards as the benchmark. As part of the statewide online course design quality initiative, FSCJ’s CeL began official, internal Quality Matters reviews of master course shells in 2020. To date, five master course shells have scored perfect or near-perfect in QM’s specific review standards. The review teams consist of a QM Certified Master Reviewer, a QM Certified Peer Reviewer who is also a subject matter expert, and an QM Certified Peer Reviewer from another discipline. The latter is considered an external reviewer.

To complete these reviews, FSCJ needs faculty who are QM Certified Peer Reviewers, and full-time faculty will be paid a stipend to complete the Quality Matters Peer Reviewer Course (PRC). In addition, the college with provide our certified faculty peer reviewers with an additional stipend for each official QM review you participate in for FSCJ courses.

How can I become a reviewer?

To become a certified peer reviewer, you need to have taught for-credit online classes within the last 18 months. Then you would complete the following:

  • Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR): Our facilitator, Barb Moyer, regularly offers these live trainings each term. To check for availability, sign into MyLearning, and search the training calendar for “Quality Matters Rubric Training.” The workshop is 8 hours and may be scheduled for a single day or broken up over two days (with 4 hours allocated for each day).
  • Quality Matters Peer Reviewer Course (PRC): This workshop is through Quality Matters’ Canvas site. The training is an online, three-week workshop requiring about 11 hours each week. You can read a more detailed description on QM’s website.

Upon completion of PRC, FSCJ Online will reach out to you to find your availability when an official QM course review is planned at the institution. Even though it is not a requirement for the stipend to serve as a peer reviewer in official QM course reviews of FSCJ’s online courses, your participation in such reviews will help the institution meet the goal of having a majority of CeL (Center for eLearning) developed online courses QM certified by 2025.
