This presentation will delve into the topic of people with disabilities with an emphasis on students with disabilities. We will attempt to bring awareness to the underlying perceptions that people have whether they are negative or ‘overly’ positive about the students who have differences. Our staff must know that students with disabilities are students first; those students need and deserve accommodations, not sympathy-laden pity. In all situations, those with disabilities just need the opportunity to excel, and ADA will discuss everyone's role in their success.

When the longshoreman comments about the size of your luggage by asking, “do you have a body in there?”, you may have overpacked. This class will follow the evolution of my minimalist packing style, from five bags to Florence to two bags to Lisbon, and how, with one small change, you can be a minimalist packer too. I will also share stories from our travels that will save you time, money, and keep you safe – and make you laugh. Like when we rode the Rome Metro with Julius Caesar and a Roman centurion or when my husband was mugged by a statue.

As we advance in our profession, often we are asked to serve as mentors. Sometimes the mentees approach for themselves; other times we are tapped and paired up as part of a more formal professional development program. The problem is that typically, there is little or no training on how to be mentor. Somehow it is assumed that the act of simply surviving and growing older in this work provides us with “secret knowledge” and the key to successful mentorship. But if you have ever had the misfortune to be paired with a bad mentor, then you know that the ability to mentor well is not something we are born with or a skill gained by osmosis. Done clumsily, it can be a huge waste of time; done poorly, it may even be a professional embarrassment. This session will provide you with clear direction about what good mentoring is, what it isn’t, what it takes to be a good mentor and how to do it well.

And one interesting fact…”I am one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon.”

Growing up in a diverse society and witnessing conflicts firsthand, Professor Mahapatra’s interest in peaceful resolution of conflicts came naturally. His research sits at the intersection of conflict resolution and public policy, with occasional forays into philosophy. Debidatta received the Scholar of Peace Award (New Delhi) in 2007 and was a Charles Wallace Fellow at Queen’s University Belfast in 2010. His publications include Sensual Austerity and Moral Leadership (Palgrave, coauthor), Gandhi and the World (Lexington, coeditor), Conflict Management in Kashmir (Cambridge University Press), and Conflict and Peace in Eurasia (Routledge, editor). Plato’s Idea of the Good fascinates Debidatta, as does his disciple Aristotle’s calling politics a ‘noble profession’. For him, Gandhi’s ‘peace through peaceful means’ is not a subject of mere intellectual speculation, but a guiding principle for organizing life and society. Debidatta believes in the ‘butterfly effect’ (but in the moral rather than the sci fi sense) that we can contribute in our own ways to build a peaceful and harmonious society. Fun fact: As a kid, he once stole a chick from a nest in a tree but returned it after his mother reasoned, ‘if you cannot stay without me how can the chick stay without its mother.’
