At Convocation in the fall of 2022, the President spoke about surveys that indicated students did not feel connected to their professors. In response to this, I undertook an initiative to address this disconnection. What started as an experiment has grown into an integral part of my course experience, and I use it in both face-to-face and online classes. My presentation will introduce my efforts, report on numbers of participants, and relate anecdotal responses from the students themselves.

In this interactive session, participants will explore ideas for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in first-year composition courses. The session will begin by presenting examples of academic honesty policies that reflect different teaching philosophies—from the enthusiastic to the restrictive—regarding the role of AI in composition. After discussing their philosophies about AI and writing instruction, the facilitators will share a variety of learning activities and assignments into which they have incorporated AI. Attendees will then view brief demonstrations of AI-based classroom exercises designed to engage students in various aspects of the writing process, such as brainstorming, drafting, and revising. As time permits, attendees will also participate in hands-on AI writing activities. Rather than perceiving AI as merely a generative tool, the session reframes it as an interactive, instructional resource through which students learn to embrace writing as an act of self-discovery.

Breathe your way through life’s storms: Tools to handle life’s pain and stress. The only people without stress and pain are dead people. Stress and pain are part of our normal “wiring”. When either becomes excessive, understanding the mechanisms of the brain and hormonal processes can enable us to focus on controlling the negative physiological effects of both of these “normal” brain functions. This presentation will briefly cover the neurological and hormonal impacts of both pain and stress, and how some simple directed mental, emotional, and breathing techniques can reduce the potential “snowballing” that pain and stress can have and the negative consequences of letting them rage out of control. Techniques in use at the Cleveland and Mayo Clinics in guided imagery and directed diaphragmatic breathing control will be described and demonstrated, and participants will be given the opportunity to utilize both of these techniques during the presentation.
