Keynote: Courses and Programs, Improving Access and Supporting the Flexible Learning Needs of Students

Brian Beatt portraitBrian Beatty - Professor of Instructional Design and Technology at San Francisco State University

HyFlex learning, in use since 2006 in a relatively small number of institutions, experienced rapid adoption during the 2019-2022 pandemic to meet the immediate local and global need for flexible multimodal education. In the rush, many institutions implemented the HyFlex approach, often without fully understanding best practices or preparing their faculty. Post-pandemic, many institutions and educators are continuing to use HyFlex to accommodate both in-person and remote students and considering long-term strategic value and implications. This session clarifies HyFlex origins, definitions, basic design principles, and student engagement outcomes. We’ll discuss course and curriculum considerations for deciding whether or not HyFlex is a good course design choice. Lastly, we’ll review a sample course design used for HyFlex teaching, discussing ways to address multi-modal assessment challenges and student engagement, especially in online modes.

Making Science Discussions Worthwhile in the Classroom

    Alexandra Stancil

This presentation offers an alternative to the usual Discussion Board found in Canvas. Here the students are asked to read real research articles, make connections, and share their thoughts through round table discussions before posting online in Canvas. The idea being to not only inform students of relative topics in the science field, but create information literate students. Students become equipped with how research is conducted, significance through collaborative discussion, engagement in the topics, connection to the lecture content and the community, as well as navigating all that the library has to offer in assisting their college careers.
